February Fill Dyke
By Doreen Lawrence
I sit indoors and hear the
rain
Tapping Morse Code patterns on
my window pane.
Silver headed snakes downward
race,
Passing all others at a
furious pace.
Empty and drear the garden
bed.
Leaden sky hangs menacingly
overhead.
No bird calls or is seen in
flight,
This dark February seems like
endless night
Gaunt branches of the winter
oak
Drip tears, lamenting summer's
fallen cloak
Of verdant leaves, now lost in
earth,
Awaiting sun's return and
Spring's rebirth.
But thanks to God for winter
rain
That fills the dykes and
reservoirs again,
Washing away last year's
debris,
Preparing earth for what is
yet to be.
