Star People
By Christopher Georgiou
They've journeyed far,
these people from the dying star
their ancestors has fled:
escaping spreading darkness
on the planet that has been
their home.
They can do no other than continue
in their quest to find, somewhere
in this eternal night, some distant
spinning rock that might contain
such elements as will sustain their kind;
provide new life.
Grown weary now but travelling still;
light years beyond their galaxy,
in desperate exploration
of the cosmos.
There is irony in that the fuel
they use will easily
outlive them.
Somewhere along the outer spirals
of the Milky Way they've found
a small rotating planet,
wrapped in blue and cooling still
from its explosive birth.
Too new for them to colonise as yet
but they have marked its place
and promised to return.
