Stars
    By Julie Day

The first thing I think of when someone says stars
Is twinkling pin pricks way beyond Mars
That brighten the dark sky in clusters at night
    Like sparkling diamonds capturing light.
But then my mind wanders off that track
To film stars, the theatre, TV, there’s no lack
Of star studded actors we think we all know
From dramas or newsreels or some other show.
Again my mind changes to where I recall
    Every Olympian giving their all
And games makers showing the world a bright side
Of human endeavour and great British pride.
And there’s my husband and children, whom I think are stars
And my friend Gill, who I hope is twinkling beyond Mars.
Having come full circle I now realise
That stars evoke feelings of awe, hope, surprise
    Whether earthbound of celestial
    Their existence is magical.
