Big budget action films with a science fiction twist.


Pacific RimPacific Rim

Sci-fi action feature directed and co-written by Guillermo del Toro. Gigantic monsters known as Kaiju rise up from the Pacific Ocean and invade Earth. As they rage war, killing millions in the process, the human race defend their planet with the use of special robots called Jaegers which are controlled neurally by their pilots. However, even these magnificent machines have trouble defeating the Kaiju. With their armed forces dwindling, mankind puts its faith in ex-pilot Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and trainee Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi). Together they must control an early Jaeger model in one last attempt to save Earth.

OblivionOblivion

Tom Cruise stars in this sci-fi blockbuster as an ex-soldier working on a battle-ruined future Earth, who discovers that the truth about the past has been deliberately concealed. 60 years after Earth is subjected to an alien attack that decimates the environment, forcing survivors to live in colonies high above the clouds, drone repairman Jack Harper (Cruise) is nearing the end of his deployment to retrieve remaining resources from the planet's surface. But Jack's world is suddenly turned upside down when he discovers a group of humans led by Malcolm (Morgan Freeman) still surviving amidst the rubble. Warned by his partner Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) not to get involved, Jack's curiosity soon sets in motion a chain of events that leads him to question everything he's previously been told

World War ZWorld War Z

This big-budget zombie apocalypse thriller starring Brad Pitt was adapted from the novel by Max Brooks. UN employee and committed family man Gerry Lane (Pitt) is forced to abandon his wife and children when a global pandemic hits, turning ordinary people into violent subhuman monsters with an insatiable appetite for human flesh. Due to the nature of his job, Gerry is deemed one of the very few people left on Earth with the ability to find the source of the virus and ultimately a cure, but will he be able to do so before the last remnants of humanity are completely eradicated?

ElysiumElysium

Neill Blomkamp writes and directs this sci-fi drama starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. It is the year 2154 and the wealthy have fled the overpopulated and largely resource-drained Earth in favour of Elysium, a luxurious space habitat located in the orbit. With no poverty, sickness or war, the contrast between Elysium and the ravaged planet it revolves around couldn't be starker, and is tough for those left on Earth to bear. When Max De Costa (Damon) learns that he has no hope of beating the cancer that has afflicted him without breaking into Elysium, with Secretary Delacourt (Foster) charged with enforcing Elysium's strict anti-immigration policies and a team of hardened troops at her disposal, led by the ferocious Agent Kruger (Sharlto Copley), Max faces the battle of his life if he intends to bridge the cosmic gap between rich and poor.

After EarthAfter Earth

M. Night Shyamalan directs this sci-fi thriller starring Will Smith and his son Jaden as a father and son who crash land on Earth over 1,000 years after humans abandoned the planet. General Cypher Raige (Smith) is an important figure in the new civilisation humans have built on Nova Prime following the mass departure from Earth centuries before. After a lengthy tour of duty, Cypher is looking forward to spending some time with his 13-year-old son Kitai. However, when Cypher and Kitai's spacecraft is damaged in an asteroid storm, forcing them to crash land on the abandoned Earth, the necessity of father-son bonding is accelerated. With Cypher critically injured from the crash, Kitai must find a way to signal for help on a planet reclaimed by nature, ruled by hyper-evolved animals and containing the alien creature who has escaped from the wreckage of their craft.

World's EndWorld's End

In a British alternative to the big budget Hollywood films, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost star in this sci-fi comedy about a group of friends who reunite to complete the pub crawl they abandoned back in their youth. Galvanised by Gary (Pegg), 40-somethings Oliver (Martin Freeman), Andy (Frost), Steven (Paddy Considine) and Peter (Eddie Marsan) return to their home town for one more attempt at trying to reach the legendary pub, 'The World's End'. But after setting out on their quest, taking in watering holes such as 'The Two Headed Dog' and 'The Famous Cock', the friends' objective soon pales into insignificance when they realise that the fate of the entire human race may ultimately rest in their hands.
