  • Dickens's many letters to the newspaper include one dated 14th November 1849 about witnessing a public execution, in which he argues against the death penalty. In another, dated 8th October 1863 he recounts his experience of an earthquake felt at his home in Higham near Rochester in Kent

  • Dickens died on 9th June 1870. News of his death appears in the newspaper on 10th June 1870 with a further account on 11th June 1870. His funeral was reported on 15th June 1870 and there is an account of his will on 22nd July 1870
