Literature and Poetry
Printed Reference Books in Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire Libraries

A-Z how to find information > Literature and poetry

  • You can find reference books such as those below at Bedford Central Library. Other libraries have smaller selections

 General

  • Dictionaries of literature and literary terms
  • Dictionaries of fictional characters, some of which suggest real-life characters on which fictional ones were based, for example Chambers dictionary of literary characters
  • Dictionaries of pseudonyms. You can look up an author's professional name and find her/his real name or look up an author's real name and find which professional name he or she uses
  • Companions to English, Scottish and Welsh literature, such as the Oxford companion to English literature. You can look up classic authors, literary works and literary topics and find concise authoritative summaries
  • Companions to the literature of other English-speaking countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, and the Caribbean
  • Guides to literature in other modern languages, including French, German, Spanish, Italian and the Scandinavian, Slav and Indic languages
  • Guides to Latin and Ancient Greek literature, such as the Oxford companion to classical literature
  • Writers' and artists' yearbook
An annual guide to organisations, publishers and other essential information for authors and artists
  • Dictionaries of quotations
See also the separate Quotations page

Poetry

  • Anthologies arranged by genre, including light or comic verse, ballads, romantic verse, war poetry, satirical, narrative or children's verse
  • Anthologies arranged by period, for example 16th, 17th, or 18th century verse
  • Anthologies arranged by place, including Scottish, Caribbean and African poetry
  • Complete works or extensive selections from the works of Chaucer, Shakespeare and Tennyson
  • Columbia Granger's index to poetry (earlier editions are called Granger's index to poetry). This is a major aid to tracking down poems. You can look up the first line or name of a poem and find out the poet, the name of the poem and details of anthologies that include it. You can also use the book's detailed subject index to find poems on specific subjects. The poems are also indexed by poet's name

Drama

  • Complete plays of Shakespeare
  • 'Harvard concordance to Shakespeare'. This enables you to look up any word from Shakespeare and find exactly where it occurs in his writings
  • Directories of dramatists
