People of African and Asian origin have lived in Britain for at least two thousand years. But this aspect of our heritage has been largely forgotten. By presenting a selection of relevant records held by The National Archives and other sources, the Black Presence exhibition aims to reclaim some of this history and make it more widely known.

Fowler Collection at Northampton University
Approximately 3000 books and serials relating to sources for the study of English history, especially the mediaeval period, and the local history of Bedfordshire. It was the personal research library of G.H. Fowler, founder of the first county record office in England, and of the Bedfordshire Historical Record Society, to whom he left the collection. The main strengths are the published sources and the material on archives administration. It is still in the process of being catalogued. You can search the university catalogue then limit your results to the Fowler Collection at 'Refine your search'.

The Soldier in Later Medieval England
The online muster roll database currently holds just under 94,962 service records. These are taken from muster rolls, housed in The National Archives (TNA), for the years 1369 - 1453. This project ran from 1/10/2006 - 30/9/2009. They have now updated all of the soldier data collected during this period and it is online and ready to search
