Willington
Church of Saint Lawrence

Places > Willington > Churches

There was a church here by the 12th century but little survives as the church was completely rebuilt by Sir John Gostwick between 1535-1541. The Gostwick chapel on the north side of the chancel contains the family monuments including that of its builder Sir John Gostwick who died in 1545.

The year 1858 saw the start of the long incumbency of the Reverend Augustus Orlebar who remained Vicar until his death in 1912. In 1867 improvements to the church were carried out by the Duke of Bedford at a cost of 182, the pulpit, desk and pews were altered. The main restoration came in 1877 when Henry Clutton carried out the work for the Duke of Bedford at a cost of 2,500.
