Wall Paintings

The wall painting is situated in a large segmental arched recess west of the sedilia in the south aisle. The painting is of the crucifixion and was found during the 19th century restorations. 

The painting has a green background with a pattern of small flowers and delicate figures.  "The figures of the Virgin and Saint John are very similar, the attempt to show Saint John as a young clean shaven man often leading him to be misidentified as a woman." (McHardy).  "The twisted figure of Christ is especially characteristic and moving." (Pevsner)
