STOTFOLD is a large village and parish, 3 miles north-west of Baldock, 9 miles south-by- east of Biggleswade, and 8 miles north of Hitchin, in the hundred of Clifton, and diocese of Ely. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, is a stone building with tower. The living is a vicarage, value 300, in the patronage of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Rev. Joseph Finch Fenn, M.A., is vicar. The Baptists have two chapels in this parish; the Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists have also places of worship. There is likewise a National School. The charities amount to 30 per annum, besides extensive commonrightsj also, seven almshouses for poor persons. The population, by the census of 1851, was 1395. The parish comprises 2300 acres. The Rev. John Allington, M.A., is lord of the manor.
