It is likely that the church replaces an earlier one on the same site., the list of incumbents goes back to 1238 with the oldest parts of the church dating from the 13th century. The building was enlarged and improved in the 15th century.
There are 19th century monuments to Lord and Lady Holland of Ampthill Park and their daughter. In 18578 the church was entirely restored under the direction of William Buttlefield. Half the cost was met by the Duke of Bedford and the remaining was contributed by the parishioners by voluntary subscription in proportion to their rating.
Later improvements included a new organ in 1907, the lectern in 1911, the re-instatement of an alter in the north aisle in 1922 and the new alter and furnishings of 1945 by Professor Albert Richardson.
