Careless Bespoke Tailor
From my research, I ascertained that Archibald Careless had set up business
as a tailor on one of the two upper floors of 105 High Street sometime around
1910, having moved there from 2A Foster Hill Road. The site was also
occupied by Kendalls, the umbrella manufacturers, and Macdonald, Teeth
Manufacturing. Thomas Careless, tailor is listed in the 1917 Bedford Directory
and is still listed in Kelly's Directory for 1931. However by 1934, the entry has
gone.
Audrey Morris told me that her late father, Haddon Careless, worked for his father, Thomas, as a master tailor in the small bespoke tailoring business. Carelesss had one or two girls working for them. Haddon worked there up until around the time of his marriage to May Scott in April, 1934. Soon after that, Haddon became a childrens evangelist with the Caravan Mission to Village Children, which was part of the Scripture Union movement.
Kellys Bedford directories confirm what Audrey Morris said about the approximate date of the closure of the tailors in the High Street - c.1933-34. She said that it then continued for a time from the family home at 4, Howbury Street, Bedford.
