DUNSTABLE is a parish, market town, and municipal borough, 5 miles from Luton, 7 from Leighton Buzzard, and 33 from London; it is in the hundred of Manshead, union and county court district of Luton7 diocese of Ely, archdeaconry of Bedford, and rural deanery of its own name. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, founded by Henry I, is a fine specimen of Norman and Early English styles of architecture, and appears to have been built upon a very grand and costly cruciform plan, with a lofty tower in the centre. The living is a rectory, in the gift of the Lord 'Chancellor, annual value, 300. The Rev. Frederick Hose, M.A. is the rector.

SCHOOLS.-There is an endowed school for the education and clothing of 40 boys, William J. Hambling, master. National, Alfred P. Wire, master; Miss Sandringham, mistress. British, Joseph Dyer, master; Miss Longton, mistress.

There are several alms houses and charities for the benefit of the poor. The acreage is 500, of which the chief owners are Mrs. Mary Brown, Mrs. Harriet Oliver, and Mr. Joseph Osborn. The lords of the manor are the Mayor and Corporation. The population is about 4,570. Market is held on Wednesday. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in the manufacture of straw plaits, for which the town is very famous.The town appears to have been a place of importance in the time of the ancient Britons, who are supposed to have had a station here. It is supposed by some that the town derived its name from Dun, a notorious robber in the reign of Henry I.
