The present church probably replaces an earlier structure on the same site with the present church dating from the 15th century with 16th century side chapels with the Lady Chapel being built with money for that purpose left in the will of Thomas Grey who died in 1506.
Under the Rev Henry Havergal, vicar from 1847-75 and brother of the hymn writer Francis Ridley Havergal the church underwent a gradual transformation. With and organ of his own design installed in 1857 and in 1860 the restoration of the chancel and reseating of the nave. Further restoration work was continued by his successor, the Rev. Harry Hocken with further work on the chancel in 1878, nave and aisles 1880 and tower in 1893-94.
