Places > Ampthill > General History > Books

Ampthill is a pleasantly situated market town, in the hundred of Redbournestoke and diocese of Ely, distant 45 miles from London, 8 from Bedford, and B from the Marston station of the London and North Western Railway. The town is well paved, and lighted with gas. It is considered very healthy, and is surrounded with hills. The population in 1851 was 1,961, and by the recent census of 1861 it was 2,144. The acreage is 1,928.

Ampthill House, the residence of Lord Wensleydale, is a large stone structure, and is situated in a park of great beauty, its oak trees being considered some of the finest in the country.

The Church, dedicated to St. Andrew, is a pleasing edifice. In the interior are several ancient monuments; also a pillar of yellow marble, with an Ionic capital, and an urn of white marble, erected to the memory of the late Earl Ossery. At the east end is a monument to the memory of Richard Nicholls, Esq., late of Ampthill House. The cannon ball which killed him is placed on the pediment, with the following inscription: - " Instrumentum mortis et immortalitatis." The living is a rectory, in the gift of the Crown. The present rector is the Rev. George Maule, M.A.

Here is a Wesleyan Chapel, Baptist Chapel, and Friends’ Meeting House.
