Further information Before joining the WLA aged 17, Cynthia was employed as a clerk in the Whitbread Estate office at Southill. She was the daughter of the Whitbread head gamekeeper. She was able to continue living at her family home, Gothic Cottage in Southill Park, and travel each day to work. There were two other land girls employed on her farm. After she was demobilised she married Norman Clarke.
