Podington
St Mary the Virgin

Places > Podington > Churches

The chancel is Norman, as is the font. The south arcade dates from around 1190 and much of the church dates from the 13th century including the lower stages of the west tower. The upper stage of the tower and the spire were built in the late 14th and early 15th century.

The steeple gave trouble throughout the first half of the 19th century and at one time it seemed likely that the fine crocketed spire would have to be removed.  The work on the tower and spire were done alongside other repairs and improvements to the church at a total cost of 958 and completed by 1841. Later work has included further repairs to the tower and spire in 1925, 1949-50 and 1978-79.
