Milton Ernest
All Saints Church

Places > Milton Ernest > Churches

The oldest part of the church is the chancel which has Norman work of the early 12th century. It was extended eastwards in the 14th century. The Chancel arch and the west tower are 13th century. In the 15th century the south aisle was practically rebuilt and a south porch added.

Further restoration occurred in 1864-65 under William Butterfield the renowned Victorian architect who also designed Milton Ernest Hall, his only major house design. A new church clock by Cope of Nottingham was put up in 1882 and in 1891 the floors in the church were entirely re-laid.

Further major work took place in 1893 when under William Butterfield's direction the west tower was restored and the bells rehung. In the 1930s extensive roof repairs were carried out under the direction of Professor Albert Richardson.
