The Bedford Steam Laundry opened in Goldington Road in 1880 and closed in 1965 with the premises being taken over by Marshalls Garages. The giant chimney, which stood 125 feet high, was taken down brick by brick in 1966 as the tower could not be blown up because of the close proximity of housing.
