Rebel Botanists
By Olivia Niro (Age 9)

Back to Poetry Connect - Looking Forward

Olivia made this deletion poem using a Guardian article. The article was about people marking the pavement with chalk to share what plants are growing so people can identify them on their daily exercise.

Rebel Botanists name forgotten flora,
Founder of weeds, names of plants.
Force Botanists armed with chalk graffiti,
Highlight names diverse flora growing in towns and cities.
Wild plants wherever they go,
With people chalking their images.
Chalked up tree names,
Botanists natural Street flowers
Plant names on the pavement,
Raise awareness of the presence,
Knowledge, respect wild plants.
People observe these plants,
Their view has changed.
Nature in the city,
Parks, streets and other spaces.
In Gardens,
awareness of urban wild flowers.
Botanists set up weeds,
Urban plants in the UK.
Wild things of my street,
Has won to chalk up the highways.
Highlight the forgotten flora.
