Back to Library FAQs

Bedford Borough offers LibraryPlus at Bedford Central, Bromham and Wootton Libraries. LibraryPlus gives you extra choice on how you use the library service with extended opening times. You are be able to use the libraries through a mixture of staffed and self-service hours, just use your library card and PIN to enter the library.

Why has LibraryPlus been introduced?

The Council is facing a huge financial challenge, these changes have enabled us to make the necessary savings while continuing to protect and improve our library service for local residents.
The introduction of LibraryPlus at Bedford Central Library, Bromham Library and Wootton Library gives you extra choice and flexibility. During the extensive consultation it became clear that Kempston and Putnoe Library users felt that LibraryPlus wasn’t suitable for those branches at this point in time, as a result it was agreed that there will be a small reduction in opening hours instead, to make the necessary savings.

How do I sign up for LibraryPlus?

Just visit your local Bedford Borough library and a member of staff will be happy to sign you up. You need to be 16 or over and a full member to register, please bring a form of ID with you showing your name and address. You will be asked to sign an agreement with us and there will be a brief induction as the LibraryPlus hours are self-service only. Once this is complete you are free to enter the library during LibraryPlus self-service and staffed hours.

What does LibraryPlus offer?

Once you are registered you will be able to enter the library during LibraryPlus self-service hours, simply by scanning your library card and entering your PIN.
When you are in the library you will be able to:

  • Browse the shelves
  • Borrow, return and renew
  • Make payments through the self-service terminals
  • Use the computers (printing is not available initially)
  • Photocopy and pay for copies
  • Study and work
  • Meet your friends and family

Do I have to sign-up to LibraryPlus to use the library during staffed hours?

No, if you only plan to use the Libraries during staffed hours then you don’t need to do anything.
If you decide you’d like to become a LibraryPlus member, no problem – just talk to a member of staff.

How do I access the Library during self-service hours?

Every time you arrive at the library during LibraryPlus hours you will need to:

  • Scan your library card at the LibraryPlus point by the entrance
  • Enter your 4 digit PIN

The doors will then open; please discourage people from following you into the library.
N.B: Wootton Library customers will require a code to open the gate in the fence as well.

Please be aware that if you are in the library during staffed hours you will be asked to leave when the staffed hours end. You will then be able to scan your card and re-enter once the building is empty.

What security measures are in place during self-service hours?

Bedford Central, Wootton and Bromham Libraries have cameras throughout for your peace of mind and safety. They are monitored by the Bedford Borough CCTV Team.
There are also security guards in place at Bedford Central Library.

Am I be able to use the computers during self-service hours?

Yes, LibraryPlus members are able to use the computers and WiFi.

When is the Heritage Library be open?

The Heritage Library is open on Tuesdays between 11.00 and 1.00, and then between 2.00 and 4.00. Don't forget that you can ask to view the resources outside of these hours, the library staff will check if the resource can be removed from the Heritage Library to be viewed during the staffed hours at Bedford Central Library.

Am I still be able to attend library activities?

Yes, library events and activities during staffed hours continue.
If your group would like to meet in self-service hours, that’s fine - you all just need to be LibraryPlus members.

If you have any more questions then please Contact Us or talk to a member of staff in your local library.
