SANDY, including the Hamlets of Beeston, Girtford, and Stratford, is a large and populous village and parish, on the road from Potton to Bedford; from the former place it is 3 and a half miles, and 8 and a half miles from the latter, and 4 miles from Biggleswade. As the London and Great Northern line of railroad will pass through this parish, it is expected it will add much to its improvement and importance. The church, dedicated to St. Swithin, is an antique edifice in the pointed style, standing in the centre of the village; the Rev. Harry Cooke is the incumbent; in the diocese of Ely, and archdeaconry of  Bedford, and in the patronage of Francis Pym, Esq., of the " Hasells."  J. Pym, Esq., Lady Payne Buckworth, and Rev. H. Cooke, are lords of the manor. The land around this village is very superior for garden grounds, and more particularly for the cultivation of cucumbers and onions, hundreds of tons of which are sent to the London markets and manufacturing districts during the season. A National school was built here in 1812, in which Lady Jane Pym takes great interest. A public school for boys also was rebuilt within the last few years, which the Rev. H. Cooke principally supports. There are chapels for the Wesleyans and Baptists. It is in the Hundred and Union of Biggleswade, except the hamlet of Beeston, which is in Wixamtree Hundred. Acres, 4,031 ; and in 1841 the population was 1,906. This place is supposed to be the Salinae of the Romans, and in the neighbourhood is a camp of 30 acres, called Cesar's Camp.
