The Project
The above project has been undertaken by the Bedford High Street History Project Group, having been inspired by the BBC programme Turn Back Time: The High Street. The programme invited members of the public to investigate and record the history of shopping in their area. An enthusiastic group of researchers volunteered to form the project group, and the Bedford High Street History Project Group was formed in 2010.
Each member of the research group chose one or two shops on Bedford's High Street, some of which are still familiar names today. The researchers then investigated the history of their shops, submitted their research, resulting in a wealth of information on the chosen shops.
