Commemorative brown plaque on the right-hand corner of the Georgian façade of the hotel on the east corner of the High Street (town bridge end) and the river Embankment. Erected in 2009.
The inscription states:
Built in 1794-96 on the site of an earlier Swan Inn.
Designed by Henry Holland for Francis Russell,
5th Duke of Bedford.
Daily calling point for the ‘Royal Mail’
and ‘Times’ stagecoaches.
