Commemorative brown plaque headed '35 High Street' (eastern side) on the façade of the present 'Wilko's' store commemorating the ironmonger's shop and plough manufactory of John Howard (industrialist). Erected 2009.
The inscription states:
Built in 1835 as the ironmonger's shop and
plough manufactory of John Howard (1791-1878),
five times Mayor of Bedford. The Howard Plough,
which was awarded a prize medal at the
Great Exhibition (1851), stood on the parapet until 1969.
