Wall plaque on the Harpur Shopping Centre facade commemorating the opening of Harpur Square, the former forecourt of Bedford Modern School.
Erected 4th December 1976.
The inscription reads:
HARPUR SQUARE
The stone facade to the former Bedford Modern School
designed in 1830 by Edward Blore, architect, was restored
by the Harpur's Bedford Charity in 1975 during the building
of the Harpur Centre
The school forecourt acquired by the Borough Council
was opened to the public by Councillor T.R. Donnelly,
Mayor of North Bedfordshire Borough Council on the
4th December 1976 in the company of Sir John Howard
Chairman of the Bedford Charity
