Marble wall plaque commemorating both the Royal visit to Bedford Boys Modern School on 27 June 1918 and also the victorious end of the First World War in November 1918
with the installation of a clock in the tower above. Visible on the right in the Harpur Shopping Centre entrance porch (during opening hours, when flowers are sold there), just off
Harpur Square. Erected 7 March 1919.
The inscription states:
The
Royal & Victory
Clock in this Tower
was erected by a number of Old Boys (whose
names may be seen in the Scroll in the Library
of this School) to commemorate the visit of
the King and Queen to our schools also to
perpetuate the memory of the glorious victories
of 1918. It was presented on their behalf
by Frederic Rich Hockliffe (Old Boy) Mayor
to Geoffrey Howard, M.A. Chairman of the
Governors of the Harpur Trust and started
on the 7th day of March 1919.
