Thomas Westley Turnley presented his drinking fountain to the town in 1870. Designed by local architect John Usher it stood on the Market Square. The fountain was demolished ten years later, however the steps of the fountain were re-used as the base for the statue of John Howard when the statue was erected in 1894.
