George Cooper opened his seed merchant shop in St. Paul’s Square in 1882. Then in 1890 he bought the freehold of a piece of land in Midland Road and had his own shop built for the cost of £2,000. This shop was at 125 Midland Road.
When George died in 1905 a partnership amongst four of his children was formed to run the firm until 1912 when the firm became a limited company. During the 1980s the firm began to struggle faced with the competition from large national companies selling their seeds to chain stores and the firm finally closed down in October 1980.
