On the north side of the river and to the east of the High Street is the site of Bedford Castle. The castle, complete with moat, was built in the latter part of the 12th century. At first it was built of clay and wood this was replaced by stone at a later date. This impression of the castle confirms that the building followed the typical Norman layout for such a fortification.
