What Is 'Notes and Queries'?
- 'Notes and Queries' is a magazine that was founded in 1849. It is
subtitled "a medium of intercommunication for literary men, artists,
antiquaries, genealogists, etc." and on its title page is the quotation: 'When
found, make a note of'
- It can be of interest to local and family historians because of the many
place names that occur in its pages and because of the many individuals who
wrote to it
- Its primary intention was (and still remains) the asking and answering of
readers' questions. Each issue has brief reports of completed research,
readers queries and replies to those queries, together with book reviews and
advertisements
- 'Notes and Queries' covers a wide and fascinating range of subjects,
mainly in the areas of English language and literature, lexicography, history,
and scholarly antiquarianism
