A small market town, in a parish of its name, in the hundred of Manshead, is 38 miles from London, 15 from Bedford, and 5 from Woburn and Dunstable. The town, which is seated on an eminence, is openly built, its houses are irregular, and of ancient appearance, The parish church -is a commodious and venerable edifice; the living is a rectory, in the incumbency ,of the Rev. Edmund Burke Lewis. Here are besides two places of worship for the baptists and methodists, and three alms-houses for ten poor widows; also a newly erected parish poorhouse. The manufacture of straw plat forms the employment of a great portion of the Inhabitants, and is an article of considerable importance in the market here. The market day is Saturday, and the fairs are April 25th, the first Mon-day in June, November 2nd and December 6th for cattle and -pedlary. The population of .the parish of Toddington :by the returns for 1821 was 1,665.
