Edward William Boness

Edward William Boness was born in Potton. In the Second World War he volunteered for aircrew service in the RAF and qualified as a Wireless Operator in March 1942 and as an Observer/Air Gunner between November 1942 and February 1943. He flew with 293 Squadron based in Italy and the Mediterranean on Air Search Rescue operations.
During his time in the RAF he flew in many different types of aircraft including the Beaufort I and II, Warwick Ic and V, Dakota, Wellington XIV and Taylorcraft. His family still have his Observer's and Air Gunner's Log Book which details all flying operations in which he was involved and his duty on each mission, extracts of which can be seen below. As a result of his War service he was awarded the Battle of Britain Star, Italy Star and the War Medal 1939-45. Happily he survived the War, married and had one child, a daughter.
