The list of incumbents at Pertenhall begins in 1154 and the church is apparently of Norman origin. The chancel was rebuilt in the 13^th century and in the 14^th century a chapel was added on the north side of the chancel. 

The 15thcentury saw the rebuilding of the aisle and the erection of a west tower, spire and south porch.  The late medieval rood screen survives and there is a 13^th century effigy of a knight which now occupies a recess in the east wall of the north aisle. Further restoration work was carried out in 1892-93 involving extensive fabric repairs and the removal of many of the 18^th century fittings.
