Little Staughton
All Saints Church

Places > Little Staughton > Churches

The list of incumbents begins in 1245 and the present church has developed from an aisleless 13th century building consisting of a nave and chancel of equal width. The south aisle and chapel were added in the early 14th century and the present chancel, clerestory and west tower date from the 15th century.

On the 12th June 1900 the church spire was struck by lightning causing considerable damage to the west end of the church and the church was closed for repairs. The spire was truncated rather than rebuilt and the roof was repaired with the old materials. While the damaged west gallery was removed, the tower arch opened up, the enclosed pews cleared away and the nave re-seated using the old 16th century benches. The church was re-opened on 15th October 1901.

In 1910 a new spire was built to the designs of W.B.Stonebridge.
