The Regimental War Memorial was originally erected to commemorate those who fell in the First World War, and unveiled on the 11th November 1921. The second obelisk to commemorate those who fell in the Second World War was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother on the 11th November 1950.
The original monument had one single column as its centre piece, the memorial to those that died in the First World War and this was moved to the left to counter balance the Second World War memorial column.
The small building originally held the book of remembrance listing over 1,000 men of the Regiment killed during the Second World War. Behind the monument is a garden of remembrance containing the ashes of those from The Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment 1945-1958. The memorial stands opposite Kempston Barracks.
