Felmersham
St Mary's Church

Places > Felmersham > Churches

This fine church dates in the main from 1220-1240. The present structure probable replaces an earlier church and later alterations to the fabric included the rebuilding of the wall of the south aisle in the 14th century, the addition of a clerestory in the 15th century and the heightening of the tower.

In 1853 the chancel was restored at the expense of Thomas Abbot Green of Pavenham Bury. During the restoration of the chancel the rare rood loft was destroyed. Between 1857-58 re-roofing of the nave and aisles took place.

In 1956 three new bells were added to the original five bells, which were recast, and 1979 the church tower was repaired and re-roofing of the church took place.
