Dean
Upper Dean Windmill

Places > Dean > Windmills

The present mill was built in 1850 for William N. Bliss to replace an earlier one.  It is of the type known as a tower windmill, consisting of a brick tower, on which there is a small cap This cap revolved on top of the tower and carried sales, which could be made to face the wind from whichever direction the wind blew.

The wind was last worked in 1906 by Charles Hall. By the 1980s the cap had gone and the building was deteriorating badly. However since then the present owners have installed a replacement  cap of fabricated aluminium based on the original design.
