Carlton church includes work of the 11th - 12th centuries in the tower, nave and chancel. Later editions included the 13th century south aisle, the lengthening of the chancel and additions of the north aisle in the 14th century and the completion of the tower in the 15th century.
Carlton church was "entirely refreshed" in 1839 and the roof was repaired in 1868 with the south porch being rebuilt about 1875.
