Bedford
St. John's Station

Places > Bedford > Railways

The line from Bedford to Bletchley was opened on November 17th 1846 and five years later the Bletchley-Oxford branch was opened on the 20th May 1851. While in 1862 a further extension took place with the line from Bedford-Cambridge opening on the 7th July 1862. The result was that Bedford found itself on an important cross-country route connecting the University towns of Oxford and Cambridge.

From the 1st January 1968 passenger services between Bletchley-Oxford and Bedford-Cambridge were withdrawn however the Bedford-Bletchley line continues to operate.

The main buildings at St. John’s station dating from the 1860s were pulled down in 1971 and the station closed on the 12th May 1984 when a spur was laid to connect with Bedford Midland Railway station with a new St. John’s halt by Ampthill Road Bridge being built.
