Travel to Work Area Summaries

As a starting point, we would recommend that you review Census Note 4 which provides a summary of key data and findings.

The East of England Development Agency (EEDA) has prepared an overview of Commuting Patterns for the East of England Region (which includes Bedfordshire), a report on commuting links with London, and a detailed report on Distance and Modes of Travel to Work. Standard Tables S119 on Method of Travel to Work, S121 (residence-based) and S129 (workplace-based) on Distance Travelled to Work also provide data for Bedfordshire and Districts. Travel to Work data is available for all geographies from Output Areas and above.

EEDA has also produced Profiles of the Employed Resident Population and Workforce population for Bedford, Dunstable and Luton which include detailed breakdowns of commuting to and from these towns.

Travel to Work data is origin-destination based, i.e. a worker lives at one location and works at another (for home-based workers, residence and workplace are the same). In the tables below, readers should distinguish between:

Residence based data which measures where the residents of a particular area work, e.g. where do the people who live in Bedford Borough work?
And
Workplace based data which measures where the people working in a particular area live, e.g. where do the people working in South Bedfordshire live?

Changes From 1991 to 2001

In the 1991 Census, Travel to Work data was based only on a 10% sample of forms; in 2001 this was increased to 100%. The 1991 10% sample and 2001 data for the residents of Bedfordshire and the 3 Districts are presented below.
