The Thing from Space
Bedfordshire Times 15th July 1966

The mystery bang which shook Stevington during a thunderstorm last week has now been positively identified by the police as a meteorite falling.

The meteorite landed in a brussels sprout field belonging to Mr. ------ ---- of Mill Farm and left a six and a half yard long crater.

Shortly afterwards Mr. ---- described the impact.  "There was a flash and bang and then dirt and smoke filled the sky higher than Stevington windmill."

On Monday, police from Kempston and Sharnbrook went to the scene and found traces of molten iron which confirmed the crater was caused by a meteorite.

A police spokesman said later: " I believe this is a phenomenon associated with electrical storms but I have never come across it in Bedfordshire before."

The police took a geiger counter with them to Stevington as a precaution.  But there was no evidence of radiation.
