Murkett Bros

Places > Bedford > Trade and Industry > Murkett Bros

In February 1911 Murkett Bors of Huntingdon submitted plans to convert the buildings of The George Hotel at 3 High Street into a motor garage. The alterations which retained much of the character of the old inn were complete by August 1911.

In 1922 Murkett Bros moved their workshop to the eastern half of the former roller-skating rink along The Embankment past The Swan Hotel. The workshop at 3 High Street then became part of the show room.

In 1959 the whole Murkett operation moved to a site in Barker’s Lane. With 3 High Street becoming Swan Court consisting of shops and offices and the workshop along The Embankment becoming after alterations the first home of the Bedford Museum opened in 1962.

Around 1970 Murket Bros was taken over by the Arlington Group which itself moved to Ampthill road at the end of the 1980s.
